Hey, ladies! It’s finally time to whip out those chunky sweaters and jeans! Well, for most of us anyway. San Diego weather is pretty consistent all year round, but the marine layer in the morning is the perfect time to really sink into all those comfy, fall feels. This cardigan is lulu’s from last year, but I linked some similar ones that I LOVE. Jeans are Old Navy, and I did the rips myself. Linking some realllly cute ripped jeans at different price points, as well.

Lace is so in for the fall, guys! Pair this cardigan with some pumps and a black lace top and it’s such a comfy way to make a statement. I also love to get my hair colored darker for the fall! I’ll admit that I’ll be wearing this cardigan way to much this fall/winter – only because it’s basically stylish pajamas and that is so my jam!

Southern California Autumn

Natives know how tricky the weather can be here! One night/morning we get a big fog and you wake up half tempted to turn on the heat, and then the next thing you know it’s 80 degrees!I’m not having it. I decree that as soon as October 1st comes, the weather should immediately drop to 60 degrees. I know that my family in New England are incredulous right now. Instead of judging, throw some of that cool autumn breeze our way!

Any who, I’m resisting the urge to bring back out my summer wardrobe and I’m just making it work you guys. This dress/flannel combo is cool enough to bare the 80 degree days and just cozy enough to keep your wardrobe fall-inspired. I’m diggin it. Pair it with some white vans and you’re set!

September’s here! Fall is coming! Pumpkins, crafts, comfort foods – the whole shabang.I wont bore you with my basic-ness over how much I enjoy this holiday, but I will say that I’m super grateful to have my husband with me for the holidays and all the seasonal festivities this year. I love to go all out on Halloween, and having Andrew home to help us celebrate just makes my love for the season all that much more intense.

You guys know I love to plan out Isla’s wardrobe way ahead of time, and this year was no different. Target/Gap/Joyfolie are killing it in the fall textiles department – the corduroy, suede, and chunky sweaters were just too much. Don’t judge, I fully admit its entirely shameful how much joy I get out of shopping for Isla.

Anyhow, I’m sure I overdid it with the neutrals this year and I’ll end up buying more patterns, but I thought starting out with some basics was the way to go and then I could add from there. Old Navy/Target/Gap always come out with new products down the line, so I figured I would just purchase a thing here and there when that time comes.

I love pairing basics and statement pieces! Don’t be afraid of the faux fur vests, either. They’re easy to clean. I’ve definitely washed them on delicate in the wash and then hung them up to dry after. I also brush out the furs so they stay looking quaffed, but I’ve only ever done it a handful of times and the vests I have for Isla still look incredible!
H&M is AMAZING for getting pants. Especially if your little one is tall like Isla. Can I have one of each, please? So cute. I also love H&M’s grunge/tomboy look – awesome for switching it up.
Joyfolie is definitely the place to go for statement pieces. They’re expensive so they’ll definitely be your splurge pieces but if you stick to 1 or 2 items (this will be hard) and shop their sales, it’s not too bad.
SHOES. In the past, I’ve been obsessed with Hunter boots for Isla, but this year’s new obsession is Mini Melissa’s rain boot. It’s sooo delicate and feminine. I’ll buy Isla a $12 pair of rain boots from Walmart to play in, and she can wear these beauties for everyday/classy occasions. Just. Too. Cute. I also stayed away from boots this year, whereas last year I was boot-obsessed! It may be a super-cold winter and I may decide to buy a pair or two a little later, but for now I’m sticking with flats because they’re a little more feminine-looking to match the outfits I’ve picked out.

Quick tip! I shopped at Target, Old Navy/Gap, and Joyfolie for Isla’s fall wardrobe and the widgets below are kind of all over the place because I grouped them together by category. Feel free to scroll and read, but if you’re in a rush, here’s a list of the things I bought at each store!

Summer Trends that Moms can Rock: The Wrap Skirt

Picture

Picture

Picture

Don’t you love those titles that are mildly offensive and drag you in? You neither? Eh, good.Moms can rock whateverthehell they want, of course, but that’s not what I mean by this title, mamas.

There are sooo many cool trends out there, like white rompers and jumpsuits. Or white pants. Or white ANYTHING.

But not being able to keep up with the times is a small price to pay for all those beautiful, nasty, sticky hands and feet and kisses. Being moms means sometimes trends aren’t practical – like skirts! Who on earth can wear skirts when you have a child who just unabashedly, at any moment, could lift it up to peek underneath? (Yes, this has happened).

No, skirts are just a no for me and other mamas, I’m sure. UNTIL I found Show Me Your Mumu’s ‘Great wrap short’ line. This skirt/short combo comes in so many flattering patterns and I love how practical they are with the shorts underneath.

I linked more options/patterns below! I would suggest going up a size if you’re unsure. I’m wearing a size large and there’s definitely no wiggle room!

Laid-Back Summer Beachwear

Picture

Picture

Picture

Hey ladies! It’s been a busy summer at the Behrens household, so blogging has been put on the back-burner! We’ve been juggling house projects (which I can’t wait to share soon), crazy military schedules, work, and isla-entertaining…it’s been a wild ride!

Speaking of being busy, my clothing has to keep up. I refuse to wear uncomfortable clothing in general, but it’s especially true when I’m busy and rushing about. That’s why this summer I’m living in kimono’s and coverups like this – they’re just so comfy. We’re usually at the beach, whether it’s just for a quick playground stop or for a full on excursion, living a mile from the beach means we’re there ALL the time. These beach kimono’s/coverups are the absolute best for these little adventures!

They’re everywhere, but I bought mine from a boutique that came to one of our local festivals this weekend called Lotus and Luna . If you’re local, I love to support local companies (and no, this post is not sponsored) but if not, I linked a couple more below!

!function(doc,s,id){ var e, p, cb; if(!doc.getElementById(id)) { e = doc.createElement(s); e.id = id; cb = new Date().getTime().toString(); p = ‘//shopsensewidget.shopstyle.com/widget-script.js?cb=1500241087101?cb=’ + cb; e.src = p; doc.body.appendChild(e); } if(typeof window.ss_shopsense === ‘object’){ if(doc.readyState === ‘complete’){ window.ss_shopsense.init(); } } }(document, ‘script’, ‘shopsensewidget-script’);

Talking Tantrums

Hello fellow moms,

Today we’re talking toddler tantrums (alliteration WIN ;] ), and how we handle them as mature, emotionally intelligent, conscious mothers.

I kid! We’re totally crazy town around here, and I find myself turning into an ugly green monster more often than I should. And while I would never shame your parenting style, I often find myself feeling guilty for the way I react with my child and the temperament I’m both promoting and instilling in her.

I come from a household that used yelling, violence, and personal degradation to settle disputes. I was taught to say the nastiest thing I could in the moment-rational or not-to win the argument. Nothing was off limits-no insult too severe, but it wasn’t until I married my husband and we got into our first real fight as a couple when I realized that my behavior was both unacceptable and completely dysfunctional. I remember the first time I went off on my husband, he was dumbfounded. This was not how his family resolved their issues, and I could tell by his expression that he had never had anyone talk to him like that in his life, and certainly not someone he loved.

I will never forget the way he responded. In his typical calm, gentle nature, he asked “Why does it have to be like this? Why can’t we just talk about it?”.

It was my turn to be dumbfounded. Never in my life had anyone responded to me the way he did; calmly, rationally, and empathetically. My demeanor immediately changed, and I went from crazy lady to calmly talking it out.

It’s crazy, isn’t it? How we self-sabotage perfectly great things by acting out in ways that are completely unnecessary? It was completely unnecessary for me to get to that level of anger, and as I reflected back on my childhood and the relationships I had with the people that had taught me the behavior, I realized that it inhibited them from having normal, healthy relationships. If I didn’t work to change my behavior and habits, it would prevent me from having them as well.

My own temperament, along with raising my daughter, are my two greatest challenges in life. I would be lying if I said I didn’t slip up now and again. I would be lying if I said I hadn’t ever exposed Isla to this behavior. And I would be lying if I said I’m never going to do it again. But I am constantly aware of how my habits affect Isla and her behavior. I challenge myself each and every day to make decisions that I’d hope Isla would make, if she were in the situation I was in.

It’s funny how life comes full swing. My own experiences with temper tantrums (which is what they are, let’s be honest) has equipped me to handle the tantrums of my toddler. When Isla starts yelling and crying, my demeanor doesn’t change. I speak to her calmly, let her know the decision I have made, and empower her to go ahead and have that tantrum on the living room floor – but my decision stands.

I’m no sanctimommy, and I’m certainly not perfect, but I have noticed an extreme difference in the ferocity of the tantrum when I get angry and yell versus when I’m calm and collected. I try to remember how I felt when my husband diffused my tantrum for the very first time, how I needed someone to just understand, love, and guide me through my thought process without escalating the situation.

I’d love to hear your thoughts. How do you tame a tantrum, and what are you personally working through as a mom?

Thanks for reading ladies, have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend, cuddle your loved ones, and for goodness sake, stay sane!

Mexican Puebla Dresses for Summer Time

one | two | three | four | five
Hey ladies! Real quick post on these adorable little Puebla dresses. This is one of my most asked questions when Isla wears these dresses my dad got her from Mexico. People are always so disappointed when I say I bought them in Mexico, so I decided to do a post linking some dresses I’ve found that you can buy online! They’re such cute dresses, it’s so funny how much they’re in style right now in Southern California! Click on the links above, these were some of my favorites.

Spring Cardi’s

Picture

Picture

I’ll tell you why I love this trend for a couple different reasons.

1.) You get some shoulder/arm coverage without adding too much warmth! I’ve become a little crazy about showing my arms these days, but I’m working on it! I just feel more comfortable with a cover or a cardigan of some sort. Until I get my summer arms under control, I’ll go for the lace cardi option.

2.) Butt coverage. Same thing! I have a large backside. No bragging here though, it’s not exactly large in the bubble butt way, but in the way that a barge is large. Okay, I kid. Not that big. Regardless, I love the comfort these guys give. It’s lacy and attractive but still lets you cover up a bit. The best of both worlds!

Mine is Forever 21 from last year, but I’ve linked some similar ones (including plus size options, yay!) Isla’s embroidered shirt is from Mexico, but her shorts and shoes are linked below!

The Perfect Easter Cake

Happy Easter! Hopefull you’re reading this as you’re sprawled luxuriously on the couch, watching someone else do all the work to prepare for your Easter dinner later. 😉

Most likely, however, you’re probably the one in charge of getting dinner together, and if you’re like me, you’re a huge procrastinator when it comes to entertaining. I swear! I have the best intentions and grandeur ideas, but the prep work and follow-through aren’t always executed as well as they could be.

This cake, however, is a procrastinators dream! You can literally get everything you need last minute at your local CVS or Walgreens.

I originally found this recipe on The Organised Housewife, but tweaked it a little to meet my own needs.

There are so many cool tutorials out there on Pinterest, and I couldn’t even BEGIN to get into the world of food preparation and photography blogging. I mean, how do they keep their stuff from burning as they stop between steps to get those perfect shots?! Nope, not for me. But I will show you how mine turned out and give you some references so you can make your own this year.

For this project I bought:
Cake mix
Frosting (2 ct) OR  Cool Whip
Easter malt eggs (I prefer the pastel colors!)
Kit-Kats
Finish with a bow (I had some on hand)

You can easily do an all white look with white chocolate kit-kat bars, use MnM easter eggs, and switch out frosting for Cool Whip to make it your own. (I did this because the frosting and candy combo were just too sweet the first time!)

Mother-Daughter Wardrobe Planning

Picture

Picture

Hey everyone! I just wanted to do a quick spring and summer wardrobe roundup for Isla and I. I always plan way ahead and catch the sales so that by the time a different season rolls around and she requires different clothing, it’s ready to go! Planning for sizing can be difficult, but I just always save the receipts in case it doesn’t end up fitting.

To be honest, I know I’m a dork but I just don’t care. I only have one daughter and I’m going to enjoy dressing us alike while she still lets me. So bring on the mother-daughter outfits!

For the spring/summer time, I’m obsessed with these cute off the shoulder tops. Luckily, they have them for toddlers too! I sprang on the opportunity to stock up on some. The ones I got Isla are great because they’re long sleeved and will be good for the Spring time here too. I just add a light jacket when we go out at night and it’s perfect.

Anything I bought that is now out of stock I’ll try to replace with something similar or something I like better. Happy shopping guys!

Let me explain this widget a bit. If you click on the first picture of the off-the-shoulder top (shown in black below) it’s actually is the exact top I’m wearing and comes in pink! The yellow little girls top below is the same top Isla’s wearing, it comes in pink too. You can also pair that toddler off-the-shoulder top with the women’s pompom off-the-shoulder top right next to it shown in baby blue, it comes in the most beautiful color yellow, too!

I’ve linked everything I could find, and I’ll add more as I find them. If you keep looking through the widget, I’ve linked more of some of the things I bought Isla for her summer wardrobe. That pink ribbon little sunhat is to die for and so great for summer! Also, so many cute little sandals! I love them all.
